The majority of this storage capacity is located in a single dam, Cahora Bassa with 90% of all installed capacity, with only one main function (energy production).
Excluding the Cahora Bassa dam, the country’s installed storage capacity drops to 275 m3 per capita per year, placing Mozambique in the group of countries with poorly developed hydraulic infrastructure.

The Central-North and South regions deserve special attention with regard to the need for storage capacity because they are the ones that concentrate the highest proportions of the population, the highest proportions of the urban population and the largest number of urban centers.
Additionally, the country already faces storage challenges to meet basic needs (water supply) in some of its main urban centers, namely Lichinga, Cuamba, Pemba, Nampula, Nacala, Quelimane, Maputo, Matola and Boane.
